In Bátor Tábor we have been changing lives since 2001. We give strength and courage for our campers to heal and restart their childhood.
With the help of our volunteers and our supporters, we have already provided lifelong adventures to more than 10,000 seriously ill children and their families.
All of these are free of charge.
At the beginning of our story, in the summer of 2001, only 35 seriously ill children participated in our first camp. Since then, we have not only opened the gates of a wonderland that revived on the premises of an old camp site in Hatvan, but with our programmes we prove it every year to a total of 3000 oncological or chronically ill children and their families that the sun always shines above the clouds. As a unique initiative in Central Europe, we are a certified member of the SeriousFun Children’s Network international camp association that was founded by the Oscar-winning actor, Paul Newman. The Brave campers coming to our camps from all over the region – Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia – are challenged to move out of their comfort zone with the help of therapeutic recreation, so they realize that they are able to cope with not only the tasks awaiting them during the adventures, but also their illness.
We also do not forget about the little heroes who are forced to fight their illness within the walls of a hospital ward as due to their health condition they are not able to get to our camp in Hatvan, Hungary: Our volunteers participating in the GO! hospital outreach programme deliver the healing power of playing to these kids.
The research made by the Yale University in 2014 confirms all we have already known for years from the many smiles, laughter, and stories we received during our camp sessions. As a result of the experiences at Bátor Tábor, the self-confidence and self-esteem of 70-80% of the seriously ill children increased, their relationship and social skills improved, and even their faith in recovery got stronger.
